Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition in which chronic inflammation affects the joints in the body. The symptoms include joint swelling, pain and immobility and permanent joint damage. While RA primarily affects the joints, it can also impact skin, eyes, lungs and blood vessels. Severe fatigue and depression have been noted with this condition. The Physical Therapy team works with each individual based upon their unique presentation of symptoms with the goal to reduce pain, minimize joint damage and promote appropriate activity. Continuous assessment and collaboration are critical components to the care of the RA patient.

Treatments include but are not limited to:

  • Massage
  • Cold/heat treatment
  • • Joint flexibility
  • TENs
  • • Ultrasound
  • • Assessment of response to medication
  • • Muscle flexibility and strengthening
  • • Recommendation for advancing to aerobic exercise based on capability
